Peter Eastgate wins World Series of Poker

Peter Eastgate a young Danish dude won the World Series of Poker. For years I thought that the entire "sport" of poker was rigged. And since then my view has not changed. How amazingly coincidental that a young cool handed Peter Eastgate comes along just when the World Series of Poker is starting to loose interest among the college aged crowd. Coincedence? I think not. Peter Eastgate is obviously just another pawn used by the World Series of Poker to garner better ratings. The sport of poker has and always will be rigged because you can take the game out of the mob but you can't take the mob out of the game, if you know what I mean.

A 22-year-old Danish poker professional won the World Series of Poker early Tuesday, turning a wheel straight on the last hand to become the youngest champion in the history of the no-limit Texas Hold ‘em main event.

Peter Eastgate hit an ace-to-five straight on the turn and instantly called an all-in bet from Ivan Demidov on the river to win the title and $9,152,416. Demidov held two pair, twos and fours.

The previous youngest champion was 11-time gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, who was 24 when he won the tournament in 1989.

“It feels good to beat Phil’s record,” Eastgate said after taking pictures with stacks of $100 bills and his new gold bracelet. “I was not focused on the record that I could break, I was just focused on the game.”

Eastgate said he got a call from Hellmuth wishing him luck before the more than three-hour session.

Eastgate built a 7-to-1 chip advantage before the decisive hand by sniffing out two bluffs by Demidov for big pots.

Eastgate, of Odense, Denmark, put Demidov on his heels by stopping the 27-year-old from bluffing a pot worth roughly 44 million chips with an ace high. Eastgate called with a diamond flush.

He won a significant pot four hands later with a full house and immediately began putting pressure on the final opponent standing between him and the title.

“My motivation was $9 million and a bracelet,” Eastgate said. “That’s what kept me focused.”

Demidov, a 27-year-old semiprofessional poker player from Moscow, took home $5,809,595 for second place, some $3.3 million less than Eastgate.

“I’m someone who’s not going to cry,” Demidov said. “I’m disappointed, but I’m going to be happy. That’s the way it turned out.”

Demidov erased Eastgate’s initial 24 million chip advantage in their quest for the gold bracelet in less than 30 minutes to start the night.

But Eastgate regained his chips and then some by the first break in play— taking a 35.8 million chip lead after hitting two pair, aces and queens.

Eastgate took a nearly 2-to-1 chip advantage after calling a 7 million chip river bet with a pair of jacks. A queen was on the board, but Demidov turned over an ace high. The call indicated that Eastgate sensed his hand was good despite the large bet and plenty of cards that could have beaten him.

“He was playing me very aggressively so I was kind of looking to kind of trap him,” said Eastgate, who said he felt Demidov was not helped in the hand by the river queen. “It worked out in different spots.”

Eastgate had to collect all the chips in play—some 137 million—to win the tournament. Chips have no monetary value and each player started the no-limit Texas Hold ‘em tournament in July with 20,000 chips.

The players were deliberate in their decisions, not rushing to shove their chips in the middle early on. As Eastgate distanced himself from Demidov, it became apparent that Demidov would need to double his stack to keep his options unhindered.

“I learned that I need to improve my hands-on game,” Demidov said.

Demidov’s finish concluded a dream tournament run that included final table finishes at the series’ main events in Europe and the United States. The Russian said he hoped his performances would help poker grow in his native country, and said he planned to play in more high-stakes live tournaments.

“A few years ago it was mostly U.S. players,” Demidov said. “Now you see more European, South American and Asian players. Poker is growing in the world.”

Eastgate eliminated five players, including Demidov, at the final table to take the title. The nine players met Sunday at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas to settle the title after taking a 117-day break to build hype for the tournament.

Eastgate started fourth in chips on Sunday with 19.7 million chips, more than 4 million away from Dennis Phillips, the chip leader at the time. Phillips finished in third and won $4,517,773.

The final grouping emerged from a field of 6,844 players that whittled down to nine over 11 days in July.

Matt Holliday goes to the Oakland Athletics

Matt Holliday is betraying his team the Colorado Rockies to pursue a luxurious lifestyle of the rich and famous in Oakland with the Athletics. Matt Holliday shows no couth what so ever by leaving his teammates in Colorado to fend for themselves and by breaking up the team spirit. The Colorado Rockies have long been a team of great commraderie and Matt Holliday's decidedly blazee attidude toward this long held tradition of the team is just another example of how so many sports players/movie stars/famous people change after they hit the big times. Matt Holliday my friends is no different. He is out for himself and no one else. He does care how many people he hurts or how many people he leaves dead and dying along the way. Shame on you Mr. Holliday. Shame on you.

Matt Holliday appears headed to the Oakland Athletics in a trade with the Colorado Rockies, baseball sources have told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick and Buster Olney.

Details are being finalized, though the teams have agreed to terms, a baseball source told Olney. The source said the deal may not be finalized for up to 48 hours.

The deal is also pending completion of physical exams.

"Talks are continuing. They're very fluid and at this point, everything's speculation," Rockies spokesman Jay Alves said, speaking on behalf of general manager Dan O'Dowd.

Oakland owner Lew Wolff, attending a regional luncheon of Associated Press Sports Editors, wouldn't confirm or deny a trade but said he had already spoken with general manager Billy Beane three times on Monday.

Pitcher Greg Smith, who was 7-16 with a 4.16 ERA last season for the A's, is one of the players in the deal, a source confirmed to Crasnick.

"I don't know how official everything is," Smith said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "All I know is I've been called, and I'm flying to Denver probably tomorrow."

The others, a source told ESPN's Peter Gammons, are closer Huston Street and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez.

The Rockies have a need for late-inning relief with Brian Fuentes about to leave through free agency.

"They just called me a little while ago and told me the deal's in place," Gonzalez said, according to USA Today. "It surprised me, but that's how baseball works. You're always subject to be traded."

Gonzalez, 23, saw his first big league action last season and hit .242 with four home runs and 26 RBIs in 302 at-bats.

Davids 2007, when he won the NL batting title with a .340 average and had 36 homers and a league-best 137 RBIs in won the NL batting title with a .340 average and had 36 homers and a league-best 137 RBIs in helping the Rockies reach the World Series. Oakland was last in the majors leagues with a .242 batting average this season and last in the AL with 646 runs. "If we can bring a little bit of hitting talent to our current team I think the pitchers won't get as frustrated as they were late in the season," Wolff told the gathering of sports editors. "You're always rebuilding and regenerating. It's fun. We want to win. I want to win. We're going to try to be there again if we can." The A's used eight starters in left field and finished 75-86, their worst record since 1998. Oakland advanced to the AL Championship Series in 2006 before being swept by the Detroit Tigers.

Rookies of the Year: Longoria and Soto

Since when did they give out 2 Rookie of the Year awards? This is stupid. It diminishes the award entirely. Evan Longoria and Geovany Soto should refuse the rewards and tell the MLB to make up their minds on who is truly the Rookie of the Year. They don't give out 2 best actor nominations at the Oscars, why should they give out 2 Rookie of the Year award nominations? I mean seriously what a stupid concept, I would like to meet the jackass who came up with this one. If you want publicity, make the award more scarce so that it is more coveted. Do not give out 2 awards with the same title!

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria and Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto won the Rookie of the Year awards for 2008, Major League Baseball said on Monday.

Longoria, who played a key role in Tampa's run to the World Series where they eventually lost to the Philadelphia Phillies, claimed the American League award unanimously in the traditional vote of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Soto, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, took the prize in the National League -- reward for a season when was outstanding in the vital defensive role while also producing 23 home runs and 86 RBIs.

Longoria is the first Tampa player to win the award.

Carson Palmer won't be QB'ing for the Bengals for another week

The oft-prone to injury Carson Palmer will be missing yet another week of crucial NFL regular season games. With the team in disarray without Carson Palmer they are left to fend off the Eagles with a secondary quarterback. Look for demonstrative loss by the Bengals as they are out ran and out passed by the Eagles who have been tearing up the turf with Donovan Mcnabb and company. It should be a great game to rally together Eagles' Fans but to Bengals' Fans it is sure to look like a horror movie.

Quarterback Carson Palmer will be sidelined for the Cincinnati Bengals' game Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Palmer has missed the last four games because of an injured right elbow. He has been doing rehabilitation on the elbow, hoping to play again sometime this season. The Bengals returned from their bye week Monday, and Palmer said nothing had changed in his comeback plans. Coach Marvin Lewis said Palmer will skip practice during the week to work on the elbow. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start in his place against the Eagles.

Nadal is out of the Davis Cup final with tendinitis in his knee

Nadal

Tennis's current top ranking poster boy has injured his knee and won't be able to compete in the upcoming Davis Cup final to be held in his home country of Spain. Nadal has been a tour de force in the tennis world ever since he started taking titles from ex-poster boy Roger Federer. Nadal didn't make his championship debut until many years after Roger Federer, however during the past years he has made such a vast change to his playing style that he is now considered to be the numero uno, the head cheese, the defacto world leader in Men's Tennis. A title that he has fought and practiced for in tennis championships across the globe. Nadal will undoubtedly recover this minor injury and will continue to make history in the sport that he has come to dominate.

Nadal will miss Spain's Davis Cup final against Argentina because of a knee injury. The top-ranked Nadal said Monday he was still struggling with tendinitis in his right knee following a week of treatment. "These are very difficult moments, but I have done all that I could to be ready for the final," he said. "It was a huge objective, and I'm used to playing with pain, but this is a distinct, new, pain that I couldn't control." Nadal's absence deals a big blow to Spain's bid for a third Davis Cup title since 2000. Spain captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario has until Tuesday to name his team. Spain plays Argentina on indoor hard court at Mar del Plata from Nov. 21-23. Nadal was a key player when Spain beat the United States 4-1 in the semifinals, winning both his singles matches. Sanchez Vicario most likely will replace Nadal with Tommy Robredo or clay-court specialist Nicolas Almagro. David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco are expected to be back on the team. Nadal this year won a fourth straight French Open and his first Wimbledon title. He withdrew from the Paris Masters last month with an injury to the same knee after losing the first set of his quarterfinal against Nikolai Davydenko. He then pulled out of this week's season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai, China. Nadal also won the Olympic gold medal in a year when he supplanted Roger Federer at No. 1.

Frank Gifford's 'The Glory Game' Book Review

Longtime NFL commentator Frank Gifford, a.k.a. the guy who cheated on his wife Kathie Lee Gifford and got caught, has a new book out about his glory days errrrrrrrr i mean about The Glory Game, a game that Frank Gifford refers to as "The Greatest Game Ever Played." He is under the belief that this game, that he happened to be involved in, some how single-handily helped transform the NFL in to what it is today. Frank Gifford couldn't be any more wrong and he would be denying all that the NFL organization as a whole did to transform this game in to a national past-time. However, with that being duly noted "The Glory Game" does contain a lot of first account stories and memorable moments of a game that Frank Gifford is at least to say very passionate about and therefore it is worth a read for anyone who is in any way interested in the sport of Football. You definetly don't need to be a NFL history fanatic to enjoy "The Glory Game."

VIDEO! Watch a video and read an excerpt of Frank Gifford’s new book. Frank Gifford’s new book is “Glory Game”. Kathie Lee Gifford spoke of book Glory Game last week on the extended version of Today. But Monday Frank appeared on Today to promote the book.

The Gifford book is about the 1958 NFL championship game between the Giants and the Colts. You need to buy this book!!

Below is a video and excerpt.

From chapter one of Frank Gifford's "The Glory Game":
We didn’t all live in the Concourse. The only two bachelors on the team — Cliff Livingston, our strongside linebacker, and Harland Svare, our other outside linebacker — lived in
the Manhattan Hotel, downtown in Manhattan, across from Downey’s bar and restaurant. They got a good rate. (All of us were always looking for rates back then — on anything and everything.)

“We all envied Harland and Cliff to some degree, but not completely. They’d come to practice after what had been a long, hard night on the town, and we’d look at their bloodshot eyes and eagerly ask them what they’d done the night before. They’d just look at each other and shake their heads. Cliff and Harland always talked about how much better off we were — we had home cooking, wives to go home to, security. But a lot of us fantasized about being in their shoes.

“Rosie Grier, our mammoth right defensive tackle, and Mel Triplett, our tough fullback, were roommates in an apartment over in Jersey: “We caught the bus, over and back,” Grier says now, as if it were yesterday, from Los Angeles, where he’s lived for years. “We couldn’t afford a car.” It wasn’t that the black players weren’t welcome at the Concourse Plaza; it was just that the fifties were simply a different time. Rosie and Mel felt more comfortable living across the river — and preferred the cheaper housing prices.

“But Rosie and Mel did draw the color line, and set a Giant precedent, at an exhibition game in Dallas in 1956. Down there, the hotels were separated by color, and one day Rosie and Mel made a statement for our team: “We were going to go to some hotel for a luncheon, and the black players on the club said they weren’t going to go to the luncheon,” Rosie told me. “We talked about it, and Mel and I decided we wouldn’t go. A couple of the older black players were on the bus. (The Giant roster had four black players in 1958: Mel, Rosie Grier, Rosey Brown, and Emlen Tunnell.) Mel and I wouldn’t get on. We figured, ‘If we can’t stay in the hotel with our teammates, then we’re not going to the luncheon.’ “

Here is the publisher’s description:

“In 1958 Frank Gifford was the golden boy on the glamour team in the most celebrated city in the NFL. When his New York Giants played the Baltimore Colts for the league championship that year, it became the single most memorable contest in the history of professional football. Broadcast to an audience of millions, it was the first title game ever to go into sudden-death overtime. Its drama, excitement, and controversy riveted the nation and helped propel football to the forefront of the American sports landscape.

“Now, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” New York Giants Hall of Famer and longtime television analyst Frank Gifford provides an inside-the-helmet account that will take its place in the annals of sports literature. Drawing on the poignant and humorous memories of every living player from the game—including fellow Hall of Famers Sam Huff, Andy Robustelli, Art Donovan, Lenny Moore, and Raymond Berry—as well as the author’s own experiences and reflections, The Glory Game captures a magnificent moment in American sports history. It is the story of two very different cities and teams, filled with the joy, the disappointment, and the eternal pride of a day that will forever symbolize all that is great about sports.

“Told with gripping immediacy, The Glory Game is an indelible portrait of the NFL’s most transcendent hours—a winter version of The Boys of Summer, told by one of football’s true legends.”
